Oh, hello. I apologize — it’s been a while since I’ve written and I’m afraid I’m back again under terrible circumstances. We’ll get to that in a second.
First, a brief update: I’ve been away from writing here for over a month. The long and short of it is that I went on vacation (and attended my graduation ceremony), then returned to a computer that had gone kaput. This issue has now been remedied, and I do intend to get back to writing for you few loyal readers (to whom I’m grateful for), as I am today.
It is with great sadness, however, that I relay that one such reader — my Grandma Joan — will tragically no longer be contributing her opinions and well-wishes on my writing, as she passed away this week at the age of eighty-one. I intend, of course, to continue sharing my thoughts on current affairs, which she appreciated sincerely, in her memory.
Now, onto the news, for which I owe you an opinion…
Today is not merely a tragic day but an infuriating one. The lack of surprise does not make the decision handed down by the Supreme Court any more gut-wrenching.
Simply put: the Supreme Court at present is not legitimate. Five justices that sit on the court (Roberts, Alito, Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Coney Barrett) were appointed by presidents who did not receive the popular vote of the American people. Those same five justices also perjured themselves by writing today’s decision despite telling senators under oath that Roe was settled law. And, every day that the sixth ideologically conservative justice, Mr. Thomas, is allowed to sit on the court despite his wife conspiring to destroy our democracy — an effort he has shown he is not independent from — is another day trust in the court rightfully erodes.
Gorsuch should not be on the court at all. That seat belongs to Merrick Garland. In Republicans’ ultimate hypocrisy, his appointment was enabled by the exact opposite consideration than that which led to Coney Barrett’s.
As I wrote in May, the Court must be radically altered to restore balance and trust. The current justices do not adequately represent Americans. They instead represent a repugnant Christian theocratic ideology that cares seldom for blind justice.
The decision today is that of evil. Jesus of Nazareth would be ashamed to know he was associated with their dogma.
Decisions on behalf of this court are unable to be sustained. The rights enshrined by Roe were overwhelmingly popular with the American public. Gay rights and contraception, which Justice Thomas, in his concurrence, directly targeted next, are equally extraordinarily popular, particularly among young people who represent the future of the country and the world whose lead it follows.
What is their end game? Forced subjugation of the majority through political violence? The balkanization of the world’s most powerful country? Seriously, where does the right think it is going? Even T**** thinks this is bad for them.
Tyranny of the minority is never sustainable in the long term. America’s mere existence is evidence of such fact. Time and again in history, when government bodies take action against a great public majority on matters of considerable importance, they are met with resistance. If the political means for such resistance are made impossible, as they are increasingly today, then individuals and groups resort to violence.
This was seen no more clearly than during January 6, 2021. T****’s most loyal followers — treasonous, hateful, bigoted, idiotic, brainwashed people as they may be — genuinely believed their voice in our democracy had been taken away from them by those in power. They became bloodthirsty.
The threat to the left and center is the very same, the only distinction being that it is legitimate, rather than a lie. The Supreme Court has made, and will continue to make, decisions that do not reflect the vast majority of Americans and that will lead to tangible harm for millions of people. The Senate, unwilling to remove the fillibuster because of the spinelessness of two individuals, is the world’s least effective “democratic” body, incapable of passing desired and needed legislation of any kind. Our anti-representative electoral system, in tandem with overwhelming gerrymandering efforts, disproportionately favor those on the right that seek to undermine our very democracy.
At what point will the majority exclaim "Enough!”?
I expect soon.
